Rules

And

Etiquette

Below are some rules and regulations that must be

Followed at all times.

The first few are laws of the Empire.

They are marked with Roman Numerals.

These laws are straight. Meaning there are no

exceptions to them.

After those, there are guidlines on how to act in the

Empire.

I: Do not get in the way of the progress of the Empire. If you are seen as hazardous to the entirety of the environment, you will most definently be; (Executed, Banned, Booted; depending on severity.)

II:All inhabitants must be atleast combat trained in some form. Any weapon is allowed in said combat training, but as previously stated, they must be trained in combat.

III: Customs must be followed at all times. If you refuse to comply, then you will not be considered an actual Mortisian and will be treated differently.

IV: What the Emperor says goes. Mixed results occur when going against it, be fore warned.

V: Godmodding, autohit, and less than adequate roleplay are not tolerated. If you are willing to learn someone of the Empire will be assigned to teach you what you need to know, but if your ego gets in the way of you progressing anywhere, then please see law number I.

VI: The Temples are a sacred place, do not desecrate them. The same goes for the Factories; do not desecrate them.

VII: By the age of ten, minors are to begin working. It doesn't have to be heavy lifting or extreme manual labor, but chores are the first step.

VIII: If you are caught in the company of a blacklisted individual without the consent of the Emperor or the Empress, you will be seen as a traitor to the nation and exiled, hunted, and killed without prejudice.

IX: The Empire is a business, whether family owned/operated or not. Failure to see that these are your comrades in battle and in life will result in diminished use and being forgotten.

Be respectful of other players and characters.

Please don't suffer in silence. Bullies are not tolerated, no matter who they are. Please donÂ’t bring OOC issues in game though. Please try to resolve any issues off-list first. No one enjoys games where people snipe at each other constantly.

Do not post in all caps. Caps are considered yelling and will mostly likely be ignored.

Please make an attempt at proper grammar. While “netspeak” may be cute in a live chat environment, it is not conducive to clear RP. Please refrain from using common chat abbreviations in your role play.

Battles and Killing

Some rooms are a No Kill Zone (NKZ). Others may allow it in In-Character battles. If it is obvious that the person you are fighting does not want to die, then decide a different ending for the battle.

In battle, OFFER attacks, and allow the other to decide the outcome.

Example: Tom and John in battle:

"Tom swings his staff at John's leg"
"John jumps back but not far enough and the tip jabs his foot"

While RP fighting is allowed in some IMVU public rooms, doing "damage" to their property isnÂ’t. If you can, often times itÂ’s more polite to bring the fight outside, away from the other characters in the room. Sure, they can "narrowly" avoid the fight, but not everyone wants to get involved in your character's drama. If you MUST have a battle in public room, do the considerate thing and pull it off to the side. This way, those that choose to interact can do so and those that want to avoid it, can.

Multiple Characters

There are those RPers who play multiple characters. Sometimes they play one of many on the same account, and other times they play several at once. This can be confusing for some. You have the option to ask Out Of Character (OOC) or you can observe and see if the person states multiple names in accordance to actions portrayed by the character named.

An example:

Yardan walks into the tavern, grabbing a copy of the “Multiverse Times” and plunking down at a table with his cup of coffee.

Behind him, Delilah leans against the wall and observes quietly. Her navy blue eyes flicker from him to the window, watching for anyone walking towards the tavern.

Pets/Tails/Magic/Animation/Music/Changing in the room

Yes, we all know itÂ’s cool and it goes with your avatar and itÂ’s a part of your character, but realize that not everyone has a computer powerful enough to handle the lag that will ensue as a result. Many role play rooms have an avatar weight limit or an animations restriction. Make note of these and abide by them when entering a room.

Outfit

While your avatar may perfectly portray your character, your character may not fit into the period/theme of the room you are entering. In this situation, find out if you can be adapted into the scenery. If you canÂ’ not, then donÂ’t take it personally. Not every public room is right for you. Simply move on to the next one on the list.

OOC (Out Of Character talking)

Its common guidelines to keep OOC posts in parenthesis () or brackets []. Some role playing rooms will allow OOC conversation to make a quick comment, but if you're going to have a whole conversation, then the polite thing to do is to please take it into your own room so as not to interrupt the flow of role-play going on.

Talking in a different language

Different role plays have different species, and different species have different languages. Some role playing rooms ask that you post a translation in English. Others will be indifferent. Most languages can be googled by you in the background and translated, but not everyone can do that. So, if someone should request a translation, take the time to offer it. Just because the person playing the character cannot understand the language, therefore needing it to be posted in English as well, doesnÂ’t mean that their CHARACTER does not understand the language. It can make for interesting story and plot if someone else can understand your conversation. However, if your conversation is THAT private, then please take it to a private window.

Mind Reading

In or Out Of Character, it is not polite to read someone elseÂ’s mind without their consent. First, prod their mind and wait for their response. If they block their mind and do not allow your entrance, then you may NOT read their mind. If they say that their character doesnÂ’t notice the intrusion or if they give permission, then you MAY read their mind. Failure to acknowledge your attempt at mind reading does NOT give you the right to know every thought the person has.

Other RP Public Room Etiquette

ItÂ’s not polite to greet anyone who has not yet made an entrance.

ItÂ’s not proper to assume names! Your character does NOT know someone's name unless they specifically tell you In Character. In Real Life, if you entered a room, you would not automatically know everyone's name. The same concept applies in the role-playing world. Just because their screen name says one thing doesnÂ’t mean it is the same name they have for the character.

"I was IC" is NOT an excuse for misconduct in public rooms. Creating a role play for the sole purpose of disturbing others is generally not tolerated or welcomed.

Many rooms have moderators that enforce the rules of the owner. If you should happen to see a moderator in a room, give them the due respect they deserve. After all, they were made moderator of that room for a reason. If you disagree with an action done by a moderator, send the room owner a message and move on to another room.

Common Misconceptions of RP. As Submitted by YardanDuran

Not all RP is about fighting and attacking. Some storylines are continuous quests (like a dungeon), some rp is based upon a social setting (like a tavern), and some are whole cities and/or kingdoms. There are others, of course, and alot of it depends on who you are rping with, and where. Private rp's can get antagonistic or romantic, just like public scenes can break out in a bar brawl or a kingdom can go to war... its a matter of where you go and who you go with. Not everyone rp's for the same purpose, nor are their characters designed for the same things.

Not all rp's are set in the past setting, fantasy, or medieval theme. As others have requested and discussed, urban rp can be attained. There are some that play modern fantasy, historical past, or straight modern realistic. Again, it depends on where you go, and who you rp with. Alot of places that I go are multiversal, meaning any time period, setting, or walk of life is allowed to walk in and interact with other time periods or species. Its a common misconstrusion that rp must be fantasy or medieval... its not the case.

No ONE person maintains the rules of RP... they are more common courtesies that have been implemented and commonly agreed upon. None of them are specifically set in stone... what one person chooses to do in their own rp is their preference and right. Again, it all depends on where you go and who you wind up rping with. Some groups will want things done differently than others. Many places will have their own rules listed somewhere, and its always best to check on what the rules are before entering someone else's rp. Its not wise to assume that you know the rules, no matter how experienced you become.

For some people, they do have a specific storyline. Many of these are done in private to prevent outside interferance or disruption from those who dont know the setting. Some who keep theirs public try to maintain a setting and story simple enough for most to participate in, as long as they have read the rules. Still, not every role play is right for just anyone. Should someone break one of the rules put forth by the members of the storyline, most times they will explain to you what was done wrong and ask you to change it. Often times, phrases such as "scratch that post" or "rewind" or "do-over" will be heard when someone makes such a folly.

Then again, there are those that are exclusive to a specific genre and may boot you on sight if you dont look like you fit in, or if your entrance post isnt up to par. Whiles many would prefer that exclusive rp's be kept to private rooms to prevent insult or boot-happiness, its their room and their rules. I have entered many rooms where I witnessed people being booted for not being dressed right, and still others where if its not obvious that you are there to rp or have some experience rping then you may get the boot. Its not always right or fair. Still, the best thing to do in such situations is to move on to the next room in hopes of finding one that is right for you. I happen to run an exclusive storyline as well, but I have a public section of this storyline in the form of a tavern that I run with various alternate accounts of mine. Its how I keep myself open and available to get to meet other role players that I may want to invite to my private storyline.

If something becomes confusing... as questions. Its always best to ask than to assume. My best advice is the same advice given to me... find a public room and watch for a while. Find out if someone in the room is willing to answer questions in a private window with you as you go along. Observe the way things are done and, when you feel ready, jump in.
